Its chameleon-like ability to adapt, evolve, and tantalize our taste buds with various flavours. Join us as we uncork the past, savour the present, and toast to the future of vodka.

Traditional Vodka: Roots and Characteristics

Let’s rewind the clock before the time of rum, tequila, whiskey, or gin; there was vodka. Although its origins are disagreed upon, it was first popularized in Eastern Europe. Vodka, derived from the Slavic word "voda," meaning water, was initially crafted as a simple, clear spirit. It was intended to be drunk neatly and quickly and was consumed for the feeling, not the taste.

It was not even distilled at first. In the frosty plains of Eastern Europe, they let the water freeze outside when making strong beers and wine. The water was the first to freeze, leaving a stronger spirit behind. This was repeated until the ‘wine’ reached an ABV strength of 25-35%. Because it was full of impurities, it was often flavoured to mask the taste.

It was not until later that distillation processes were developed, allowing the spirit to reach the higher ABV it is known for today. But what truly sets traditional vodka apart is the meticulous attention to detail during distillation. Multiple distillations, often involving copper pot stills, are employed to achieve the unmistakable clarity and smoothness for which vodka is renowned.

During the Russian Revolution in 1917 Vodka spread its worldwide popularity. However, during that time, many prohibitions occurred across nations as well. This caused many bartenders to escape to Europe. With its clean and neutral profile, traditional vodka was a canvas for mixologists and enthusiasts to work their magic. There, they created famous cocktails, like Bloody Mary or Martini, which we recognize today.

So, as we raise our glasses to vodka's traditional roots, let's tip our hats to the craftsmanship, history, and timeless elegance that have made this spirit a beloved staple in bars and homes around the globe.

Shifting Tides: Exploring the Rise of Flavored Vodkas

While traditional vodka laid the foundation, the innovative flavours pushed the known boundaries. It all began with a simple question: What if vodka could be more than just clear and neutral? Enter flavoured vodkas, the game-changers that took the spirit world by storm. There was no turning back from the first whispers of fruit-infused concoctions to the explosion of bold and daring flavours.

Early attempts at flavour experimentation may have raised a few eyebrows, but they also sparked a revolution. Did you know the first flavoured vodka was Absolut Peppar, launched only in 1986? As pepper and vodka are the main ingredients in the Bloody Mary cocktail, Absolut Peppar made things much easier for the famous Bloody Mary bars. Many citrus flavours soon followed, gaining popularity in distilleries. However, several bars and restaurants have created their house-made infusions as well.

Changes in consumer trends fueled this niche’s innovation. As palates become more sophisticated and adventurous, vodka producers rise to the challenge, crafting spirits that reflect their audience's ever-changing tastes. Gone are the days of playing it safe with predictable fruit infusions. Today, vodka aficionados are craving something more daring.

However, vodka and its recipe, which we recognize today, are known for their clean, natural ingredients, grains like wheat, rye, or potatoes, that have been purified through distillation.
