Pour & Explore Sauvignon Blanc
Pour & Explore Sauvignon Blanc
It’s summer and what says “summer” more than a sunny patio, light snacks, good friends, and a cold, dry, refreshing glass of white wine? For many of us, that perfect glass is Sauvignon Blanc. And for those who disagree... well, I’m here to gently say you’re mistaken.
With styles ranging from crisp and grassy to ripe and tropical, Sauvignon Blanc offers something for everyone. Its versatility and global reach make it one of the most dynamic white wines out there.
The Signature Style
Sauvignon Blanc is known for its herbaceous character. Think leafy greens like fresh basil, tomato stems, and cut grass. These aromas come from a compound called methoxypyrazine, also found in green bell peppers. Fun fact: methoxypyrazines are also present in Cabernet Sauvignon—unsurprising when you consider that Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc are the parent grapes of the “king of grapes,” Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Origin: Bordeaux, France
Let’s start where it all began: Bordeaux. Often overshadowed by the region’s famous red blends, Bordeaux's white wines deserve more love. Sauvignon Blanc is typically blended here with Sémillon, creating a wine that balances zesty acidity with Sémillon’s round, beeswax-like richness. Sometimes aged in oak for added depth, these blends can age beautifully. For a great-value option, look for “Entre-Deux-Mers” on the label.
The Powerhouse: New Zealand
You can’t talk about Sauvignon Blanc without mentioning New Zealand—home of some of the most recognizable SB in the world. What started as a 1990s trend has solidified into a global favorite. While New Zealand makes up only 1% of total global wine production, it produces a whopping 16% of the world’s Sauvignon Blanc.
These wines are intensely aromatic and bursting with flavor—grassy and herbal, yes, but also layered with tropical fruit like passionfruit, guava, and juicy citrus. They're bold, expressive, and instantly recognizable. A wine we all prayed for on blind tasting exams.
The Purist’s Pick: Sancerre, Loire Valley
My personal favorite Sauvignon Blanc comes from the eastern edge of France’s Loire Valley, in the limestone-rich hillsides of Sancerre. Here, the grape is showcased in its most elegant, unadorned form. Expect piercing acidity, chalky minerality, and notes of green apple, citrus, and white peach. There’s often a subtle smokiness, along with herbal and floral touches like thyme and elderflower.
Sancerre can be a bit of a splurge, but if you're craving that style without the price tag, look for a Vin de Loire Sauvignon Blanc—it offers a similar profile at a more approachable price.
Homegrown Talent: British Columbia
Last but not least, let’s give a shoutout to our own BC producers. While Sauvignon Blanc isn’t widely planted here due to its lack of winter hardiness, when you do find one, it’s worth picking up. BC styles often fall somewhere between Bordeaux and New Zealand, with a mix of fresh herbs, floral notes, sweet citrus, and grassy undertones. They're vibrant, expressive, and uniquely BC.
So, whether you're team Sancerre or team Marlborough, there’s a Sauvignon Blanc out there for you. It’s a grape that shines in the heat of summer and beyond—perfect for pairing with food or sipping solo while soaking in the season.
